Review the 3-D designs of the Fat Tire Rim / Tire Design. As you can see, I have completely changed what every other fat tire manufacturer is doing. Others allow the tires width to dictate the tires height, where current tires are approximately 110 to 120 mm wide and 100 mm+ in height.
This causes two issues:
First, it causes extra weight in the tire giving you additional mass to rotate.
Second, it gives you a large tire tread radius, (the current tire has a much greater arch in the tread or it is too round at the tread), which forces you to deflate the tire to get a maximum foot print for soft terrain like sand, mud and snow, and is not as stable of a foot print for downhill racing.
By shortening the tire side walls it changes the tread radius and gives you the same foot print other tires achieve by deflating the tire, while fully inflated. This tire can stay fully inflated, (you may wish to deflate slightly in really soft conditions, but nothing like all the current tires will use), and now you have much less, 2” less, of side wall on each side, better rotational mass, less rotational mass with a larger tire at 5” width, a much larger foot print, and a tire which has much greater stability.
The current tire has about 9.5” (or 24.1cm) of total width or tires area. The Diameter of the wheel or tire is about 29.5” or 74.9 cm. That gives the current tires a surface area of about 6.11 sq ft or 5667.9 cm Square. When you take off the 4.5 cm on both sides or 1.77”, this makes these tires have 37.4% less surface area or weight. You could increase the width of the new tire design which is 5” now to 6” and still have over 25% less weight than the current tires have. This is a huge difference in rotational weight, rotational mass, the speed and acceleration the rider can get out of the new tire compared to the old. These Rim/Tires will beat any other bike in a race with this kind of reduced mass. Not even considering the better tread radius, so the tire can get same traction with no deflation.
Doing The Math:
Using the lightest weight tires now available we find them to be about 1200g, there are a few in this category, the Vee Rubber Snow Shoe and a few other made by Surly all fall into the weight category. So we will have two different tires for now and a studded one by next winter.
Using the fact that our tires have about 45mm less side wall this is what we have found. The "Xtreme Warrior 5.0" ( 5”X29.5”), this is the 29er version on a 25.5” OD rim. If you subtract the reduction in surface area of about 1966 cm/squared, and then using the wall thickness and the density of rubber at about .975/cm, (cubed). The new tires should weigh about 820g with a huge reduction on the mass and rotational weight. These are the other tires we also call "Xtreme Warrior 5.0 ( 5”X26” )" version that will fit on all current rims for 26” tires.
Using the same design with about 45mm of side wall omitted and then the fact that this tire is only about 26” in total diameter you the would have about 92.65” of circumference on the 29er tires and only about 81.60” of circumference on the 26” tires, so about 11” less distance per rotation. But taking that 11” of tire away your weight of the 5” X 26” tire would be about 12% less weight then the other tire or about 730g total weight. This again is a huge difference in acceleration, rotational mass, climbing and juts general ability to race and ride faster with these tires then any other Fat Tire on the market and with a Patent Pending Status number 61/962,909 no one else can even come close to these weights for Fat Tires .
By taking the 29ers concept, and making the rims 25.5” OD Diameter, you have the same OD of the whole tire system as the existing tires have (even about ½” more) and much less mass. The results achieving is the same distance traveled, (if not more) per rotation as the tire is ¼” to ½” taller. The last issue is that all the currently designed holed/lighter rims are not symmetrical , they all have holes missing on the top and bottom on these rims, this will cause issues with rotation as speeds are increased , like downhill racing. We have taken that issue and resolved that as well. These changes solve the issues faced with the Fat Tire Wheel System.
Taking this design one step further, I changed the Rim design is such a way that I have taken the diameter of the old rims at about 22.5” to top of the wall , and changed it to 25.5” to top of the wall . But to make weight the same I added an additional 5mm of height to the rim holes and 10mm of width which makes the rim lighter, as well, to any other Fat Tire Bike Rim , then I added two additional holes to give the rim complete symmetry and balanced . This makes the larger rim even lighter or at minimum the same weight as the smaller rims, but if you use the math they will be lighter .
Doing The Math:
Now on the rims we have achieved the same thing by have a much less weighted rim. On our 26” rim system we have looked at the Surly 100mm Clown Shoe and the Surly 82mm Rolling Darryl. The Clown shoe has a weight of about 960g and the Rolling Darryl about 860g. So on our Xtreme Warrior Light Weight 26” Rim we have made our holes larger, added two holes, as these others are not symmetrical and are missing these two holes, and therefore reduced our surface area by about 352.8cm/ squared and using the thickness of the alloy and the density of that same alloy we will have a rim that has a weight of about 760g. This will be about 200g less then the 100mm Clown Shoe and about 100g lighter then the Rolling Darryl that is only 82mm wide, where ours in 100mm in width. This again is huge. But we also did the math on our larger 29er rim, "The Xtreme Warrior Fat 29er". This rim as it will have 36H and also be completely symmetrical with holes all the way around the rim. Using the same math and taking the change in surface area this rim will be about 100g lighter then the Clown Shoe and weigh about 855g and be almost the exact same weight as the much narrower Rolling Darryl which as we stated is about 860g. making both wheel systems much, much lighter than anything else out and anything that can be coming out with our Patent Pending Status.
So let’s add all this up. I made a larger Rim diameter with less surface area by about 100 cm/ Square, than the old ones or current designs, therefore much less rim weight, by about 20%. Then I fixed the symmetry of the wheel/rim system so the rim is balanced for better rotation. Next, I made a 5.0 inch tire with 37.4% less surface area and weight then any other tire on the market, but to add to that it has a much flatter foot print so no or less deflation of the tire on soft terrain. Making a lighter wheel system, better foot print, and generally a much, much faster bike with this wheel system than any other currently or future can be. The Crown of this Jewel is that I then filed a Patent giving myself Patent Pending status, so no one can manufacture this system but my company or me.
